Bark mulch serves many purposes. Of course a major one is that it makes a garden bed look uniform, refined, and finished bringing additional beauty to your yard and landscape. But there is more that mulch can do for you and your yard in Everett.
Bark mulch will help keep moisture in the soil and help event rapid evaporation of water from the soil. This will assist in the amount of water needed to keep plants and shrubs healthy and alive over a hot summer days. Bark mulch also helps to keep weeds down in garden areas and to make those weeds that do grow easier to pull. The mulch blocks sunlight from reaching seeds and roots of weeds in the soil keeping them from sprouting. Seeds that fall onto or into the mulch and do sprout will be poorly rooted with their roots anchored in the mulch itself, where it is easy to pull due to the lose nature of the bark mulch.
Most Northwest bark mulch tends to fix nitrogen from the soil as well helping to deplete the surface layer and further retard weed growth. But the mulch tends to break down over time returning absorbed nutrients into the soil and adding their own additional nutrients for garden plant growth. Overall, bark mulch is almost the ideal finishing treatment to your garden landscape to improve the beauty of Everett.
Bark mulch should be applied to about the depth of a middle finger...about 2 to 3 inches in depth. This amount of bark is sufficient to create a light barrier to the soil and help keep weeds down. Applying less may seem attractive but it is unlikely the homeowner will be happy with the result over time. Old bark mulch should be removed and discarded so as to keep the build up of acidity to a minimum in the garden when applying a new layer of bark mulch.
