The definition of topsoil is that it is the top 2 to 8 inches of the surface of the earth (usually) not including the water! It has the largest amount of organic matter and microorganisms and is where the biological activity occurs. It is different from garden soil or potting soil. Garden and top soil are designed for placing plants in so that the plant receive the appropriate amount of moisture and drainage. There are different kinds of garden soil for different kinds of plants, such as vegetable plant garden soil, flower garden soil, and even herb garden soil. These soils are tightly controlled in the amount of sand to silt to clay.
Pacific topsoil is designed for larger landscaping jobs to sculpt and settle a landscape and as a base for lawns in Snohomish and Bothell. Topsoil is made of the same ingredients as garden soil but the ratio of the ingredients is less tightly controlled. Make sure that you buy and apply the right soil for the job at hand.
Garden soil tends to cost more than topsoil. Area landscapers generally use it in and around plants to create micro-environments for the plants, using the topsoil to scape around and between those areas. The result is a balanced landscape, easy to maintain, at a reasonable cost that is designed to provide maximum growth and health of the landscape around your residence. Whatever your decision on the type of soil you are seeking make sure that the PH level of the new soil is appropriate for the conditions you intend to apply it. There are also times where it is wise to mix garden soil with topsoil to achieve a more cost effective balance while still gaining the drainage benefits you are seeking from the garden soil. This method is for sure a compromise but may be worth taking if you have a large area to cover. We are happy to provide advice on these approaches.
